When Joe Barcheski of Pompano Beach, FL took delivery of his new 2006 Mazda MX-5, the first thing he wanted to do was drive it to Farmington, PA where his daughter lives with her husband and 11 year old son. However, the winter weather in Pennsylvania and other obligations put this trip on the back burner for a while. When his copy of MazdaSport Magazine arrived with information about Miata Mountain Mania the date for the trip was settled.
By chance, Joe and his wife Marie-Helen received an invitation to a family wedding in New Jersey. It was for the week after Miata Mountain Mania... perfect!
Now there were three good reasons to drive north: see his daughter and grandson, take part in Miata Mountain Mania, and attend a wedding. But this was still not enough. Joe contacted two different friends in North Carolina and told them he would be passing through their area. Both extended invitations to spend time with them. On the trip north Joe got off the Interstates and spent a night in the mountains near Brevard, NC. Then on the return trip Joe stopped to see a childhood friend who has a waterfront home in Sneads Ferry, NC. More back roads ... great!
In all, the 17 day trip covered over 4,000 miles and took them through 10 states. Joe was in his glory, especially when driving in the mountains with the top down. Marie-Helene was a good sport about making this trip. She didn't complain about being cramped up in a roadster for hours on end, even when they were creeping along I-95 in torrential rain.
